Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been urged by the political pressure organization Action Collective (AC) to provide an explanation for his abrupt resignation from a presidential commission looking into severe sexual harassment claims against him.

In recent months, a contentious political dispute has erupted after Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of harassment.

The demand from the organization comes after it was reported that Akpabio abruptly left the panel without giving a formal explanation, despite having initially agreed to participate in the probe.

The development has sparked a lot of conjecture and raised eyebrows over the Senate President’s motivations.

Since accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment in public, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has been at the center of the dispute.

The Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan while the investigation was going on, a decision that many have deemed controversial. The suspension may have been an attempt to silence the senator and stifle the allegations, according to critics.

On April 2nd, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu established a team to go into the allegations.

According to reports, Vice President Kashim Shettima was chosen to chair the panel, which also included Attorney General of the Federation Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser Mallam, and representatives nominated by Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The panel’s task was to carry out an exhaustive and unbiased investigation into the issue, which has garnered a lot of public attention and embarrassed the political establishment.

Concerned by Akpabio’s lack of explanation, the statement called on him to provide a convincing defense of his behavior.

“We are surprised to hear that Senator Akpabio has withdrawn from the investigation panel without offering any official explanation. This has sparked widespread speculation across the country,” the statement read.

The group further disclosed that Akpabio’s main reasons for leaving the panel were his lack of trust in its impartiality and excessive meddling by the Executive Arm of government.

This has caused Akpabio’s confidence in the current government to be called into question even further.

“Is Akpabio saying he lacks confidence in the current presidency or President Bola Ahmed Tinubu?” the statement questioned, calling for clarity on the matter.

Action Collective has requested that Akpabio deliver an official explanation to the public or stand down from his post as President of the Senate.

His failure to interact with the panel, according to the group, merely serves to heighten the conjecture surrounding the accusations.

“We believe that Senator Akpabio owes Nigerians and the world a duty to speak out or step aside as President of the Senate,” the statement continued.

The group also drew attention to efforts to deflect criticism, especially the actions of Prof. Mgbake, who was purportedly paid to fabricate accusations against Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The group claims that these tactics have failed since the truth has come to light, further undermining the credibility of the sponsors.

“Recently, one controversial and discredited Prof. Mgbake was sponsored to raise some allegations against Senator Natasha, but in the process, the God of justice exposed both the sponsor and the woman,” the statement noted.

Action Collective has urged leaders of thought to speak up and assist defend the reputation of the nation.

The group also called on the presidency to ensure that the probe is not pushed under the floor and that justice is done.

“We are calling on the presidency, who has taken a commendable step, to ensure that this issue is not swept under the carpet,” the statement concluded.

In Nigerian politics, the accusations against Akpabio and his subsequent decision to leave the inquiry have spurred a broader discussion about responsibility, openness, and the fight for justice.

Ayodele’s prediction comes as Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is engaged in a complex and intense struggle that has set her up against both the Kogi State political establishment and the Nigerian Senate leadership.
