Former Senator Shehu Sani has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to personally visit the victims affected by the devastating flash floods in Mokwa, where approximately 150 people lost their lives.
Sani stated that as the country’s leader, Tinubu should travel to Mokwa in person, walking through the flooded ruins to offer comfort and stand in solidarity with those mourning and displaced.
He also urged the leader of the opposition to make a similar gesture by visiting the affected community.
Over 150 people reportedly died, and thousands were forced from their homes after intense rainfall triggered severe flooding in parts of Niger State.
The deluge began late Wednesday and extended into Thursday, hitting the rural town of Mokwa especially hard.
In a post shared on his X account on Sunday, Sani acknowledged the significance of President Tinubu’s launch of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.
However, he stressed that the President must also show compassion and empathy toward citizens facing hardship.
He said:
“Over 150 people perished in Mokwa’s flash floods. Mokwa is in Niger State, neighbouring Abuja. The highway launched by the Government was great, the book launched by the opposition was good. The head of the country should physically visit Mokwa, and the head of the opposition should physically visit Mokwa. They should march through the muds and remains of Mokwa and meet with the orphans, the widows, and widowers of Mokwa and console them in their moments of grief and sorrow. Leaders should demonstrate empathy. That is humanity. God bless Nigeria.”
