The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed a significant increase in petrol prices over the past year. According to the NBS’s Premium Motor Spirit Price Watch for July 2025, the average retail price of a litre of petrol rose from N770.54 in July 2024 to N1,024.99 in July 2025, representing a 33.02% increase.
However, the report noted a 1.22% decrease in the average retail price compared to the previous month, from N1,037.66 in June 2025
The NBS’s state profile analysis showed that Jigawa State paid the highest average retail price at N1,107.52 per litre, followed by Lagos and Sokoto at N1,100.29 and N1,100.00, respectively. On the other hand, Zamfara, Yobe, and Kogi recorded the lowest average retail prices at N884.63, N950.60, and N986.67, respectively.
The report also highlighted zonal variations, with the Northwest Zone recording the highest average retail price at N1,035.85, while the Northeast Zone had the lowest price at N1,017.65 per litre.
These findings underscore the need for continued monitoring of fuel prices and their impact on the economy and citizens’ livelihoods
