On Friday afternoon, the community of the University of Jos in Plateau State was engulfed in shock and panic after a dead baby was found in a drainage system linked to a female hostel in the Naraguta area of the campus.
As per eyewitness accounts, the shocking discovery— which incited widespread outrage and emotional responses from students and residents alike— came after students had complained about a blocked sewage system and a foul odor. This prompted authorities to summon maintenance workers to probe the source of the blockage.
A porter, who wished to remain unnamed, reported that the deceased infant was likely discarded in a toilet following an abortion performed by an unidentified female student.
She asserted that the plumbers summoned to repair the broken toilet system uncovered the corpse of a baby, which resulted in the shocking incident.
She stated that when the plumbers broke through the pipes to find the cause of the blockage, they found the remains of a baby stuck in the drainage system.
The porter mentioned that the development astonished many, with students voicing disbelief that an event like this could happen in a hostel setting.
While some students voiced their disappointment regarding the incident, others demanded a comprehensive inquiry to determine the perpetrator and ensure justice was served.
As of the filing of this report, the university authorities have not yet released a statement regarding the unusual discovery. Attempts to obtain a comment from the institution’s Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful, as she did not answer calls or reply to messages.
