The United States government has lauded Nigeria for the successful apprehension of senior figures within Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, commonly known as Ansaru.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria described the arrests as “a significant step forward in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and extremism.”
This praise follows an announcement by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who revealed that two high-ranking members of the terrorist group Mahmud Muhammad Usman (also known as Abu Bara’a) and Mahmud al-Nigeri (also known as Mallam Mamuda) were arrested in a coordinated security operation carried out between May and July.
According to Ribadu, both individuals are key operatives of Ansaru, a group responsible for several violent acts and insurgency-related activities in Northern Nigeria.
In response to the arrests, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga earlier referred to the development as a “significant breakthrough in the war against terrorism.”
The U.S. government echoed this sentiment, reposting Onanuga’s statement and commending Nigerian security agencies for the success of the mission.
It said, “We commend the Nigerian Government and security forces on the successful arrest of wanted Ansaru leaders, Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a) and Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda). This is a significant step forward in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and extremism.”
