The Lagos Green Economy recently brought together large corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to share experiences on incorporating sustainable business practices into their supply chain processes. The event aimed to highlight the importance of discussing finance and bringing sustainable commerce into the economy.
The Commissioner of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State, Tokunbo Wahab, represented by Dr Tunde Ajayi, General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), emphasised the significance of driving sustainability through SMEs. “Lagos has well over 8,000 SMEs, and driving sustainability through them is one way of pulling more people into the net,” he said.
Ajayi also highlighted the steps taken to support SMEs in transitioning to sustainable practices. “We have provided opportunities for them to get financing to transition from fossil fuel to green electricity… There is the employment trust fund that gets financing or loans for them,” he said
The convener of the event, Korede Oluwola, added that the Lagos Green Economy Forum is structured to converge relevant stakeholders to deliberate on the roadmap and financing mechanisms to motivate the SME sector to commit to climate action and sustainability.
The event featured an interactive discussion session with panellists from various organisations, including 7UP Bottling Company Plc, MTN Nigeria Communications PLC, TecnoServe, and the United Nations. They discussed the SMEs’ sustainability journey and the importance of education and training in transitioning to sustainable practices.
The forum also launched an app called Green Track, which guides SMEs on how to transition to sustainability. Oluwola said the event marked the beginning of a groundbreaking journey, with post-event activities, including workshops, training, and webinars, planned for the future.
“The conversation will keep going,” Oluwola said, emphasizing the importance of working with SME umbrella organizations to promote sustainability across all sectors of the Nigerian economy
