Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has extended his congratulations to Catholics in Anambra and around the globe following the successful selection of a new Pope by the church.

On Thursday, the church chose Robert Cardinal Prevost as its new leader. He has assumed the title Pope Leo XIV.

Anambra is recognized for having one of the largest Catholic populations in Nigeria and is currently home to two cardinals. One of them was among those considered for the papacy and took part in the election process for Pope Leo XIV.

In a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, Soludo conveyed his delight over the announcement, noting that the new Pope represents the inclusive and global nature of the Catholic Church.

“He is the first American Pope, and has a rich French and Italian heritage, and a deep connection to the vibrant Catholic community in Peru.

“His background is marked by significant missionary and pastoral work in Peru, including his service as a parish pastor, seminary rector, and canon law teacher.

“These speak volumes of his dedication, spiritual depth, and untiring commitment to the service of God and humanity.

“He has distinguished intellectual prowess, shown in degrees in Mathematics and Canon Law, coupled with his extensive leadership experience within the Order of St. Augustine, which lay a strong foundation for his Petrine ministry.”
