Yoon Suk Yeol, the impeached president of South Korea, was arrested by the country’s authorities on Wednesday on suspicion of rebellion. The troubled leader stated that he consented to cooperate with the investigation, which he denounced as unlawful, in order to prevent violence.

Even while the nation has a history of pursuing and imprisoning former leaders, his arrest—the first for an incumbent president—is the most recent shocking turn for one of Asia’s most vigorous democracies.

Since lawmakers decided to stand him down following his brief proclamation of martial law on December 3, Yoon has been holed up at his home on a hill, protected by a small army of personal protection who thwarted an earlier attempt at his arrest.

He claimed that after over 3,000 police officers marched on his home to take him into custody in the wee hours of Wednesday, he made the decision to submit to interrogation in order to prevent any violence.

“I decided to respond to the CIO’s investigation – despite it being an illegal investigation – to prevent unsavoury bloodshed,” Yoon said in a statement, referring to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, CIO, heading the probe.

Later, a motorcade carrying the troubled president from his home to the CIO offices was spotted.

His attorneys stated that the arrest warrant was unlawful as it was issued by the incorrect court in the wrong jurisdiction and the team that was tasked with looking into him was not authorized by law to do so.
