Stop protest now – Inter-Religious Council begs Nigerians

The Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), led by His Eminence, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), says it has been deeply troubled by the current state of affairs in the nation.

The NIREC stated in a statement signed by Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, Rev. Fr. Prof. Cornelius Afebu Omonokhus, Executive Secretary, and Archbishop Dr. Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, that while hunger and misery are undoubtedly present in the nation, civil disturbance is not the answer.

“NIREC hereby calls on fellow citizens of Nigeria to please call off this protest and give the Government a chance to redeem itself,” it said.

“In just one day lives and an enormous amount of property have been destroyed. Imagine if this continues for a prolonged period of time, only God knows the extent of damage that would be incurred.

“The Council calls on the security agencies to be more professional in the discharge of their duties. NIREC urges the government to expedite action towards meeting the yearning and needs of the citizens. We need a peaceful and tranquil nation we can be proud to call our own. May God bless us all.”

Meanwhile, on Thursday, August 1, 2024, peaceful demonstrations under the hashtag #EndBadGovernance got underway countrywide.

Everyone begged the protest organisers to postpone it because they were afraid it would become another EndSARS protest, but the government in particular begged them not to.

And now, because of the sad circumstances, the once-peaceful protest has turned violent, resulting in the loss of life and property.
