The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) has announced a three-day warning strike, scheduled to commence on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, and end on Friday, January 24, 2025. This decision was made in response to an alleged plot to unjustly deprive non-teaching staff of polytechnics and similar institutions of their rightful career progression.

In a letter to the Minister of Education dated January 14, SSANIP expressed its grievances and commitment to ensuring non-teaching staff receive fair treatment. The association appealed to the government to intervene in the alleged deprivation of its members’ career progression on CONTEDISS 15, part of the ongoing redrafting of the Polytechnic Schemes of Service.

SSANIP National Secretary, Comrade Nura Shehu Gaya, stated in the letter, “This strike is, therefore, a warning to underscore the seriousness of our grievances and our unwavering commitment to ensuring that non-teaching staff are not marginalized or denied their deserved career progression.”

The association emphasized that both teaching and non-teaching staff have distinct salary structures, and addressing this issue will not deprive teaching staff of their rights. SSANIP urged the government to take urgent steps to address the issue and prevent further escalation.

The letter was copied to several authorities, including the Minister of Labour and Employment, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, and the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

SSANIP has consistently advocated for the implementation of career progression policies that accommodate both teaching and non-teaching staff. However, the association claims that its efforts have been met with resistance, prompting the decision to embark on a warning strike.

The strike is expected to affect polytechnic institutions across the country, with non-teaching staff set to down tools and withdraw their services. SSANIP has urged its members to comply with the strike directive, emphasizing the need for unity and solidarity in the face of perceived injustice.

In a statement, Comrade Nura Shehu Gaya, SSANIP National Secretary, said, “We are committed to fighting for the rights of our members, and we will not back down until our demands are met. We urge the government to take our grievances seriously and take immediate action to address them.”

The development has raised concerns about the potential impact on polytechnic education in the country. Students and parents are anxiously waiting to see how the situation unfolds, hoping that a resolution can be reached quickly to minimize disruptions to academic activities.
