Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, has been accused by the presidency of “irresponsible politics” and neglecting to put the wellbeing of his constituents—many of whom it said were among the poorest in the nation—first.

Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, issued a strongly worded statement Friday morning in which the Presidency expressed disappointment over Governor Mohammed’s alleged focus on political grandstanding rather than tackling the urgent issues facing Bauchi State.

“Governor Bala Mohammed is playing irresponsible politics instead of addressing the numerous challenges facing Bauchi State.

“The people of his state, who still rank among the most impoverished Nigerians, deserve better leadership and governance,” the statement read.

Governor Mohammed was also chastised by the Presidency for allegedly deflecting attention from important state concerns by criticising President Bola Tinubu’s administration. It stated that Governor Mohammed seemed more interested in using the federal government as a “diversionary tool,” whereas President Tinubu remained committed to enacting changes to promote economic recovery and national growth.

Governor Mohammed was urged by the statement to consider his accomplishments in enhancing the quality of life for the people of Bauchi.

“President Tinubu has a national mandate to deliver on his promises, and Nigerians are already seeing the positive impact of his reforms. Meanwhile, the question for Governor Bala Mohammed is simple: what is he doing to make life better for the people of Bauchi State? Has he utilized the increased resources at his disposal to improve their quality of life?”

President Tinubu’s commitment to promoting cooperation with state governments and stakeholders in order to improve the welfare of Nigerians was also underlined in the statement. It issued a warning that any efforts to thwart the federal government’s reform plan were “undemocratic” and “self-serving.”

As of the time this report was filed, Governor Bala Mohammed had not yet addressed the accusations made by the Presidency.
