Tension in Warri as Itsekiri youths protest INEC Ward delineation, threaten war

Due to a violent protest by some Itsekiri youths on Monday at the well-known Okumagba Estate in Okere-Urhobo land over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ward delineation, a major problem is currently developing in Warri, Delta State.

The Itsekiri youths chanted war songs while holding placards with various inscriptions, denouncing the person and image of the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Program, High Chief (Dr.) Oweizide Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, and his private security company, TANTITA Security Services Nigeria Limited.

In addition, the Itsekiri youths vowed to go to war with the Urhobos of Warri and their Ijaw neighbors if INEC did not reverse its ward delineation decision.

The Okere-Urhobo teenagers showed maturity by ignoring their Itsekiri counterparts, who were trying to provoke and restart the fratricidal conflict in Warri over the issue, according to our journalist who observed events in the town today.

Following last week’s celebration of the late Maj. Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro’s day, the Ijaw youths stayed indoors and went about their business.

In response, Comrade Austin Ozobo, national president of the Ijaw People’s Development Initiative (IPDI), said that the Itsekiri youths had invaded Ijaw settlements on Okere-Urhobo and NPA territory.

“They went to a business premises and attacked people, destroyed vehicles, and injured people.”

According to Comrade Ozobo, “The Itsekiris’ action is a call for war. But I spoke with people who suffered unlawful attacks and invasion from the Itsekiris’ irate youth to remain calm and law-abiding.”

In order to maintain peace, he urged Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Delta State Commissioner of Police CP Olufemi to look into today’s incident at NPA and bring the guilty Itsekiri youths to justice.

At the time of this publication, the Okere-Urhobo youth president was not available for comment.
