Shehu Sani, a social analyst and former senator, has expressed worry about several traditional behaviors in some parts of Nigeria that he considers detrimental and out of date.
Sani wrote on his social media profile (X account) that he was happy to see many traditional organizations abandon what he called “fetish practices” related to selecting new kings or chiefs after the death of the current ones.
He gave the startling example of a town in central Nigeria where a new ruler is not permitted to ascend to the throne until they have “eat the heart” of the deceased.
Sani labeled the practice barbarous and demanded that it stop if it is still practiced, although he did not name the community.
“There is a community in the Central part of this country where the new monarch has to ‘eat the heart’ of the late Monarch before ascending the throne. I hope they have stopped. We must separate our culture from barbarity,” he wrote.
