Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has criticized Nigerian politicians for neglecting the principles of federalism after assuming office, even though many advocate for it during their campaigns.

Speaking on Friday during an interactive forum held in Owerri, Imo State, El-Rufai emphasized that Nigeria’s foundation was rooted in a federal system of governance.

He noted that political figures often champion the ideals of “restructuring” and “true federalism” when seeking office, but tend to abandon those ideals once in power.

El-Rufai expressed concern over how successive administrations have embraced a centralized model of governance, which he believes has hindered the country’s progress.

“This country was founded as a federation, but it appears that there are very few committed federalists in Nigeria. Recent experience would seem to suggest that federalism is a concept often touted by those seeking power who promptly forget about it once suitably empowered,” he said during his address titled ‘Moving Forward Together’.

He pointed to Nigeria’s early federal structure during the First Republic as a period that promoted inter-ethnic cooperation, democratic resilience, and economic growth. He blamed the centralization trend that began in the 1970s for eroding those positive gains.

El-Rufai argued that the central government has taken on excessive authority and resources, while delivering minimal results. He stressed the need for more autonomy at the state level, particularly in areas like law enforcement.

He applauded the constitutional changes in 2023 that placed electricity and railway operations under the concurrent legislative list, allowing states greater control over those sectors.

However, he called for deeper structural reforms, drawing attention to the recommendations made by the APC’s 2018 Committee on True Federalism, which he chaired.

“In moving forward together, we should strive to be a nation of merit, putting our best forward in the mighty effort needed for economic development,” he concluded.
