Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN, has claimed that his bail was revoked because he attended a political event in Kebbi State, but the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, has denied this.
In a statement on Saturday, the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stated that the issue is solely related to unfulfilled bail requirements and has nothing to do with politics.
The anti-graft agency claims that Malami’s ongoing arrest was only due to his inability to fulfill the five requirements of the provisional administrative bail that had previously been granted to him, and that it had nothing to do with his political activity or media appearances.
The Commission characterized the allegation as false narratives spreading througout society.
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, though not disposed to joining issues with respect to its operations in the media, is compelled to respond to the patently false claims of a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, about a purported revocation of his bail over attendance at a political gathering in Kebbi,” Oyewale stated.
He emphasized that administrative bail is a temporary, discretionary remedy given to offenders while investigations are completed and they may be arraigned in court.
The EFCC further stated that following a brief interview on November 28, 2025, Malami was granted provisional administrative release, subject to five requirements, none of which he has fulfilled.
