Local government officials in the coastal Indian state of Odisha have verified that a stampede during a Hindu festival on Sunday killed at least three persons and injured numerous others.
The terrible event happened in Puri, where hundreds of worshippers had assembled close to the Gundicha Temple for the yearly Rath Yatra, a Hindu chariot celebration that draws enormous crowds every year.
A rapid surge in the crowd triggered the mayhem, according to district administrative official Siddharth Swain.
“There was a sudden surge in the crowd. Nine devotees experienced breathlessness and were taken to the hospital. While three died, the others are in stable condition,” Swain told reporters.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the precise number of people injured in the stampede, although local media reported that several others were hurt.
Mohan Charan Majhi, the chief minister of Odisha State, called the event a “tragic incident” brought on by the “overwhelming rush of devotees.”
Majhi expressed his sympathies to the relatives of the deceased and declared that an official investigation had been started in a post on the social media site X (previously Twitter).
“This negligence is unforgivable. I have directed an immediate investigation into the safety lapses, and exemplary actions will be taken against those responsible,” he stated.
Similar instances in recent months have preceded this most recent catastrophe. during least 30 pilgrims were killed in a pre-dawn throng during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj in January, while six people were slain in the state of Goa during a fire-walking ceremony in May.
