Three Kaduna State Assembly members defect from PDP to APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has gained three members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a desire to identify with the state government’s leadership.

The lawmakers, Samuel Kambai of Zango Constituency, Emmanuel Kantiok of Zonkwa Constituency, and Henry Mara of Jaba Constituency, each made their announcement in their wards on Thursday.

They blamed their defection in separate phone interviews on Governor Uba Sani’s leadership, which they say has had a major effect on the state.

Their action comes only two days after Amos Magaji, the National Assembly lawmaker for Zangon Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency, deserted.

The lawmakers said they would be better able to serve their constituents if they joined the ruling party.

Mara stated that the PDP’s long-standing hegemony in the area is eroding and that a change in Southern Kaduna’s political environment is unavoidable.

He alluded to the potential for additional opposition party defections.

Kambai, for his part, claimed that Governor Sani’s accomplishments had changed how people saw the APC, lowering animosity against the party and lessening the power of the opposition.

According to him, “Southern Kaduna has historically supported the PDP but Governor Sani’s leadership is reshaping that trend.”

Kantiok acknowledged the security issues that had previously beset Kaduna, but he gave the governor credit for the current state of relative quiet and promised to back programs that build on the gains made thus far.

The APC may continue to gain ground in the Kaduna State House of Assembly as a result of these defections.
