Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, has called President Bola Tinubu’s administration “clueless and insensitive” in response to recent comments made by former Transportation Minister Chibuike Amaechi.
In honor of Amaechi’s 60th birthday, Eze claimed in a press release on Wednesday that the former minister’s admission of hunger at a symposium “is a mirror of the hunger, suffering and hopelessness facing millions of Nigerians under Tinubu’s leadership.”
“As it is in Nigeria today, under the insensitive and clueless government of President Tinubu, it is an act most abominable for any Nigerian to say he is hungry. In fact, it is now a national taboo and sanctionable crime for Tinubu’s men to hear that Nigerians are hungry,” Eze stated.
Eze referred to the situation as a national emergency and stated that government supporters, especially Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, should not have made fun of Amaechi’s remark.
“Imagine, Tinubu, beating Nigerians, impoverished by his obnoxious, anti-people and self-serving economic policies, and yet, doesn’t want them to cry out over hunger,” he said.
Eze claimed that Amaechi’s remark was a patriotic appeal for Tinubu to reconsider his “nonexistent economic blueprint” in order to prevent a national collapse, a subtle but earnest call to action.
“Amaechi saying he is hungry is a subtle way of advising Tinubu to have a rethink and save Nigerians from dying. It’s a hard truth that must be said without minding whose ox is gored. It is speaking truth to power. It’s nothing but the truth.”
According to him, the statement highlights the stark truth that only individuals in positions of authority or control over public finances can afford three meals a day, while the majority of people barely make ends meet.
“Without mincing words, Amaechi made the statement to draw the attention of the insensitive Tinubu’s government and the entire world to the unending hunger and abject poverty causing most Nigerians to commit suicide and not be sure of their next meal.”
Eze warned that sycophantic behavior, particularly by officials like Wike and his associates, only serves to increase popular animosity and accused government officials of living lavishly while millions of people suffer.
“Contrary to the reasoning of Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, a man that was moulded, tutored and brought to political limelight by Amaechi, the statement of the former Transportation Minister literally did not mean he can’t feed himself or his family.”
“Amaechi’s statement was a pointer to the fact that it is either you are in government or among those engaged in looting of the country’s treasury… or else you will feel the pang of hunger.”
Eze claimed that the Tinubu administration had caused more hardship than the Nigeria-Biafra conflict.
“Even during the Nigeria/Biafra War, Nigerians were not subjected to the level of wickedness and poverty currently pervading the nation under Tinubu due to his misguided policies.”
He pointed out that Amaechi had served in the government for more than 20 years without being accused of stealing, and that he had every moral right to raise issues on behalf of the populace.
“Amaechi is Nigerians, and Nigerians are Amaechi,” Eze declared.
He also asked the president to adopt humanitarian policies and warned against “weaponizing hunger.”
“Building flyovers in Abuja and making noise can never quench the thirst and hunger in Nigerians. If you are hungry, can you ascend and descend from a flyover?”
Eze said there is hope for Nigeria in the run-up to the 2027 elections and urged people to have faith and pray. He called on authorities like Wike to cease disparaging dissenting views and encouraged Tinubu’s administration to “show sympathy.”
“Sycophancy is another major problem in the country that must be tackled,” he added.
