Prof. Attahiru Jega, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Livestock Reforms, has voiced optimism about the president’s ability to resolve the prolonged conflict between farmers and herders—provided the appropriate reforms are enacted with the backing of key stakeholders.
He shared these views during a distinguished personality lecture titled The Political Economy of Livestock Development in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects, held on Monday at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State.
The event was part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations and was organized in recognition of Senator Saliu Mustapha.
Jega, who previously served as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), linked the persistent farmer-herder clashes to increasing land scarcity, climate-related challenges, and mismanagement of natural resources. He emphasized that addressing these root causes is crucial to achieving lasting reforms in the livestock industry.
“President Tinubu has demonstrated the willingness and capacity to solve this crisis. What is needed now is stakeholder support, especially from the National Assembly, security agencies, and state actors, to implement evidence-based reforms,” he said.
