Tinubu risks losing 2027 election like Jonathan – Northern elder warns

Alhaji Dabo Sambo, a Northern elder and public affairs analyst, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the increasing banditry and insecurity in the north immediately.

He cautioned the president that failing to do so could drastically reduce his chances of winning reelection in 2027.

Speaking to reporters, Sambo listed security as the biggest issue facing the country, where people’s lives and property are constantly at danger.

He emphasized that one of the government’s primary duties is to ensure the safety of its citizens and cautioned that failing to meet this obligation will cost Tinubu politically.

Sambo said, “If President Tinubu refuses to wipe out the security challenges, he will definitely not win the 2027 election,” he warned, drawing parallels with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s defeat in 2015, which he also attributed to unchecked insecurity.”

“The era of carton noodles and salt distribution during campaigns is over,” he said.

“People want security and food. Without these, they will not vote,” he said.

He emphasized that banditry and kidnappings plague Nigeria’s North-West and North-East regions, which produce over 60% of the country’s food.

According to him, terrorism caused farmers to abandon their crops, which decreased food production and resulted in price increases and hunger.

Sambo said, “Food is scarce in Nigeria and people are hungry,” attributing the escalating food crisis to security issues in the North-East and North-Wes areas, which account for more than 60% of the nation’s agricultural production.

He also mentioned the wider economic effects of insecurity, which are steadily depleting the savings of regular people. These effects include inflation, high transportation costs, and the depreciation of the Naira.

Sambo claimed that in order to control the security situation and try to revive local farming within a year, Tinubu needs to take action within six months.

If not, he said, it might follow in the footsteps of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was largely unsuccessful in winning reelection in 2015 because of the same issues.
