According to reports, the presidency is working on a plan to split Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections, which is thought to have exacerbated the ongoing conflict between President Bola Tinubu and Muhammad Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano.
Once allies, Tinubu and Sanusi are now at war over politics, legal disputes, and divergent perspectives on government, according to a Punch article.
When Sanusi declared he would no longer back the government’s economic plans, the fallout became well known.
Government representatives retorted that his support was superfluous and rejected his stance.
Even after Sanusi specified his stance, it was still evident that he and Tinubu were at odds.
When Sanusi accused the Jonathan administration of corruption in his capacity as governor of the Central Bank in 2013, their relationship officially began.
Tinubu and opposition leaders backed him after he was suspended.
When Tinubu and other supporters supported Sanusi in securing the office of Emir of Kano, this tie became even deeper.
However, following Sanusi’s overthrow by then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020, the friendship started to deteriorate.
According to reports, the Presidency now backs Emir Ado Bayero, Ganduje’s appointee, over Sanusi in the ongoing legal disputes pertaining to the Kano Emirate.
According to reports, this has angered Sanusi, who feels the administration is against him.
According to political observers, the purported plan to divide Kano is a tactic to help the ruling APC win more votes in next elections.
Additionally, according to sources, the Presidency’s activities are motivated by worries about Sanusi’s support and allegiance to opposition leaders, especially former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) told PUNCH: “The presidency is not supporting Sanusi in the ongoing legal battle. They are supporting Ado Bayero, who was installed by Ganduje, and have been using the Federal High Court against the emir. However, the Supreme Court has ruled that a Federal High Court lacks jurisdiction over a matter involving a state’s traditional ruler.
“Sanusi is also aware that the presidency intends to split Kano into two ahead of the 2027 general elections. For instance, some people refer to Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, while others refer to Bayero as the Emir of Abuja. The strained relationship between Tinubu and Sanusi stems from the presidency’s move to remove him the throne”.
Sanusi, who is renowned for his strong views, said that Tinubu’s economic policies have made unemployment and inflation worse.
Critics claim his strategy has increased tension between him and the government, even if his comments reflect the hardships faced by many Nigerians.
Observers think that this rivalry has deep political roots and is not only about governance or ideas.
They cautioned that the current crisis may erode public confidence in political and traditional institutions.
There are increasing calls for reconciliation, with many advising both sides to put the country’s stability and unity ahead of their own political or personal interests.
