Tragedy struck on Monday afternoon when six students of Federal University, Lokoja, and a driver lost their lives in a devastating accident. The students were on their way to school in a shuttle bus when an articulated vehicle carrying wood and hundreds of kegs of palm oil rammed into them at the permanent site, Felele, Lokoja.

According to an eyewitness, “The articulated vehicle was carrying wood and hundreds of kegs of palm oil heading to the Abuja axis; unfortunately, the driver lost the brake and rammed into the FUL shuttle bus already filled up with students and was about to convey them to school. The university shuttle bus was crushed by the articulated vehicles.” The eyewitness described the scene as chaotic, with debris scattered all over the road and students screaming for help.

The accident occurred at about 2:30 pm on Monday, and officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) quickly responded to rescue those trapped under the articulated vehicle. Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, the State Sector Commandant of the FRSC, led the rescue team and confirmed that those injured had been taken to Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja and Kogi State Specialist Hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the mortuary of the hospitals for identification.

Mr. Oyedeji noted that he couldn’t confirm the exact number of fatalities, but the FRSC is working tirelessly to support those affected by the tragedy. “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims,” he said. “We urge all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules to prevent such incidents in the future.”

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and the university has declared a three-day mourning period in honor of the deceased students. The university’s management has also promised to provide support to the families of the victims and to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
