A third-year undergraduate student of the Electrical Engineering department at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was found dead inside the campus on Sunday, January 12, 2025. The body of the 21-year-old student was discovered in the Azad Hall of Residence.
The circumstances surrounding the student’s death are still unclear, and police are investigating whether it was a case of suicide or foul play. According to sources within the institute, the student’s parents had visited him on campus earlier that day but found him unresponsive when they knocked on his door.
The parents, who reportedly visit their son frequently due to his health issues, forcefully opened the door to discover his lifeless body. The student had recently been shifted to a single room due to academic concerns.
A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and local police are continuing their investigation. Sniffer dogs and security guards were deployed at the scene, and police are analyzing the student’s call logs.
A large crowd gathered outside the Azad Hall of Residence after news of the incident spread but was later dispersed by police.
IIT Kharagpur issued a statement expressing condolences and describing the student as “academically gifted.” The institute confirmed that the student’s family was on campus and that authorities were cooperating fully with the investigation.
