Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, has announced a transformative $51 million planned gift from an anonymous graduate of the class of 1979. This generous commitment will provide endowment support for student financial aid and fund faculty positions in engineering and statistical and data sciences.

The gift is a significant boost to Smith College’s efforts to make high-quality education more accessible and affordable. In 2021, the college eliminated loans from its undergraduate financial aid packages and now meets the full financial aid needs of every enrolled student, awarding more than $100 million annually in scholarships and grants.

Approximately two-thirds of current Smith students receive institutional financial aid, 18 percent receive federal Pell Grants, and 17 percent are first-generation college students. This planned gift will help ensure that Smith College remains a beacon of opportunity for talented students from all backgrounds.

“In an age in which it is more important than ever for women to excel in technology, especially in the fields of engineering and computing, it is crucial to endow a leading educational institution like Smith College and to benefit women’s contributions in the STEM fields,” said the anonymous alumna.
