In order to avoid being detained and deported by the administration of President Donald Trump, Nigerian illegal immigrants in the United States have turned to hiding and limiting their travel.

About 3690 Nigerians in the US could be deported, according to a document from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations.

Mexico and El Salvador are the countries with the most deportations, with 252,044 and 203,822 deportations, respectively, according to the document, “Non-citizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship.”

According to the paper, as of November 24, 2024, ICE has 1,445,549 non-citizens on its non-detained docket with final deportation orders.

This comes when the Trump-led administration launched its anti-illegal immigration efforts as soon as he took office on January 20, 2025.

The US Justice Department also vowed to bring charges against state and municipal officials who disregarded immigration orders, in response to Trump’s aggressive stance against illegal immigrants.

As a result, on January 23, 538 illegal aliens were deported from the United States.

Nevertheless, the biggest deportation operation in history was in progress, as Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed on her official X handle.

A Nigerian in Florida who spoke on condition of anonymity in response claimed that since Trump’s rise, many illegal immigrants have been fleeing in terror.

“We have stopped going out, no more work and church. The situation is terrible as we live in fear. In spite of that, we believe the situation is better than the hardship and insecurity in Nigeria,” he stated in an interview on Friday.

However, the federal government of Nigeria has stated that 201 Nigerians are currently in the custody of US authorities and should be deported.

The Federal Government has not been informed of the date and time of their deportation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The established diplomatic practice was to officially communicate such intentions to the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC,” said Kimiebi Ebienfa, the ministry’s acting spokesperson, in order to deport Nigerians.

“The total number of 201 Nigerians is currently in their custody for deportation, but the date and time for deportation have not been communicated.

“And there is no way they will be deported to Nigeria without communication with the embassy in Washington DC,” the official said.
