The Trump administration remains on heightened alert amid growing fears of a possible Iranian retaliation following recent U.S. airstrikes on major nuclear sites in Iran. Senior defense and White House officials have described the next 48 hours as especially critical.
Three officials two from the Pentagon and one from the White House have stated that although no specific threat has yet surfaced, intelligence assessments indicate that Iran or allied regional groups could target American interests or personnel, either within the Middle East or even domestically.
“It’s a tense and unpredictable window,” one senior defense official told NBC News.
“We are watching for signs of retaliatory movement, but it’s not clear yet whether it will come through direct missile strikes, cyberattacks, or proxy action.”
According to two defense officials, Tehran has long-standing contingency plans in place to strike U.S. military sites and diplomatic posts throughout the region. While there is no indication these plans are currently being carried out, they remain active and could be activated at any time.
U.S. bases in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, and across the Gulf region have reportedly elevated their alert status to the highest level. Increased security has also been enforced at American embassies, consulates, and forward-operating sites across the Middle East.
Although tensions have been intensifying since Israeli strikes on Iran began on June 13, the direct military involvement of the United States particularly the overnight bombings of Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan—has triggered serious concerns that Iran might respond with a wider or more unconventional approach.
President Donald Trump, announcing the airstrikes from the White House early Sunday, referred to the mission as a “precision campaign.” He emphasized “peace through strength” but also delivered a stark warning to Tehran against escalating the situation further.
U.S. intelligence agencies are actively monitoring communications between Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and allied militias in countries including Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.
“This is a very volatile time,” a senior White House official said. “We are prepared, but we’re also being extremely cautious.
The president has made clear that any attack on American lives or property will be met with overwhelming force.”
