Trump ‘orders US military to draw up plans to seize Panama Canal’

President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. military to develop plans to seize control of the Panama Canal as part of his efforts to “reclaim” the waterway.

Reuters reports that the U.S. Southern Command has been working on a range of potential strategies to ensure full American access to the Panama Canal. This was confirmed by two military sources.

The draft plans reportedly include options such as working closely with Panamanian security forces, as well as the more drastic measure of using U.S. troops to forcibly take control of the canal, though the latter is considered less likely.

It is believed that Admiral Alvin Holsey, Commander of the U.S. Southern Command, presented these proposals to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth this week. Hegseth is also set to visit Panama next month.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the U.S. needs to take back the canal, citing concerns that China controls it and could use the waterway to undermine American interests.

In his inaugural address in January, Trump once again accused Panama of failing to uphold its promises made during the final transfer of the canal in 1999.
