On Saturday, President Donald Trump signed a six-month funding bill into law, successfully avoiding a government shutdown.
White House Spokesperson Harrison Fields confirmed the signing on X, expressing gratitude toward the Democrats who collaborated with Republicans to pass the continuing resolution.
This follows the Senate’s passage of the bill on Friday, just hours before the midnight deadline, with a vote of 54-46. Two Democrats joined nearly every Republican in supporting the measure.
Earlier on Friday, the bill passed a crucial procedural vote with the help of 10 Democrats, who supported the bill in a 62-38 vote. This was significant as 60 votes were needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster.
The voting occurred after a tense 48-hour period, during which Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., diverged from most of his Democratic colleagues. Initially, Schumer had declared that the bill lacked sufficient support, but later announced he would back it. However, he ultimately voted against the final passage.
The bill, which had passed the House earlier in the week along party lines, will keep the government funded through September 30, marking the end of the current fiscal year.
Under pressure from the left wing and House Democrats to block the GOP-backed measure, Schumer had been cautious about revealing his strategy for averting a shutdown. But by Thursday, Schumer announced his support for advancing the bill, which provided cover for other Democrats to follow suit and reduced the risk of a government shutdown amid growing economic uncertainty.
In a speech defending his decision, Schumer argued that a shutdown would have been more damaging than passing the GOP-backed bill, warning that it would have handed Trump, along with his billionaire adviser Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), greater authority to reduce the federal workforce and government services.
“Clearly, this is a Hobson’s choice; the CR is a bad bill. But as bad as the CR is, I believe allowing Donald Trump to take even much more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option,” Schumer said.
