Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland lacks respect – PM

On Monday, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for failing to treat the people of Greenland with the respect they deserve since he renewed his interest in acquiring the island, which is rich in minerals.

It’s important to recall that Trump had restated his desire to acquire Greenland during his speech to Congress last Tuesday, where he painted a future of prosperity and security for the island’s citizens, who live in the autonomous territory of Denmark.

In a post on his Truth Social account on Monday, Trump stated that the U.S. would continue to ensure the safety of Greenlanders, a commitment they have maintained since World War II.

“We are ready to invest billions of dollars to create new jobs and make you rich,” he said.

Responding to this, Prime Minister Egede remarked that the people of Greenland deserve respect and noted that he doesn’t believe the U.S. president has shown them that since taking office.

“I think that the recent things the American president has been doing means that people don’t want to get as close to (the U.S.) as they might have wanted in the past,” Egede said.

The prime minister has consistently emphasized that Greenland, with a population of just 57,000, belongs to its people, who should have the right to decide their own future. He is a proponent of Greenland achieving full independence.

It is reported that while Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, is closer to New York than Copenhagen, the island is rich in mineral, oil, and natural gas resources. However, its economic development has been slow, and it remains heavily dependent on fishing and annual subsidies from Denmark.
