Residents of Moriki town, which is in the Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, have reportedly successfully negotiated with infamous bandit leader Bello Turji to reduce a ransom demand made on the village. A Wednesday deadline was established for payment of the N30 million ransom, which had previously been set at N50 million.

Sources revealed that the ransom was allegedly imposed as compensation for the recent killing of Turji’s cattle by the commander of the Nigerian Army base stationed in Moriki. Turji’s cows died as a result of the commander’s activities, which apparently control the base, which prompted the bandit to demand money.

Every household head in Moriki is required to pay N10,000 as part of the ransom agreement, and single persons must pay N2,000 apiece. The Army commander warned the villagers not to make the payment, but out of fear for their lives, the people have started gathering the money. The commander promised to stop the incident from happening again and gave the locals assurances that Turji’s animals would not suffer any more harm.

The residents of Moriki are still fearful, though, as they think that if Turji’s demand is not fulfilled, there may be more violent attacks on their neighbourhood. According to the ZINGTIE, the villagers worry that if they don’t pay, They would be left unprotected to Turji fury.

Apart from the ransom issue, ZINGTIE also revealed that Turji is still holding about fifteen local politicians and social activists who were kidnapped from Moriki. The fact that the kidnappings happened in spite of the military presence in the region raised more questions about the degree of security and protection provided to the local populace.

Residents of Moriki are faced with a tough choice as tensions rise: obey the bandit’s demands or risk a violent reprisal from one of Zamfara’s most dreaded criminals.
