The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has extended its campus closure for another week due to the ongoing wildfire crisis in the region. The decision comes as the wildfire death toll rises to at least 16 people, with over 150,000 residents forced to evacuate.
Initially, UCLA closed its campus on January 9 and 10, canceling undergraduate classes and switching postgraduate tuition online. In an update on January 11, Chancellor Julio Frenk announced that the closure would be extended through January 17, with all teaching moving to remote mode.
Chancellor Frenk appealed to students for “continued flexibility and understanding” during this challenging time. He also advised staff to work from home if possible.
The UCLA community has shown remarkable kindness and support during this crisis, Chancellor Frenk noted. “I want to thank you for these acts of compassion… We are seeing what happens when we all come together.”
In contrast, the University of Southern California (USC) plans to start its spring semester as scheduled on January 13, with in-person classes. Although USC’s campus is not near the wildfires, the institution is closely monitoring air quality and has moved all student activities indoors.
USC President Carol Folt and colleagues expressed appreciation for the Trojan community’s caring and compassion during this challenging time. “Together, we will fight on and overcome this and embrace the term ahead with the promise and excitement we love at USC.”
