The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus, home to 46,000 students, has been largely abandoned as students flee due to concerns over the nearby Palisades fire. Despite officials stating there is no immediate danger, students have left the campus amid poor air quality and a decision to move classes online.
The Palisades fire has been raging since last week, with over 24,000 acres burned and only 11% containment. The fire has led to evacuation orders in nearby areas, and UCLA students are taking precautions.
Chancellor Julio Frenk has been keeping the UCLA community informed through video statements on social media, urging students to remain vigilant and resilient.
Many students have already made their own arrangements to leave, with some describing the campus as a “ghost town.” Only a few students remain, mostly resident assistants and international students whose families are far away.
Tommy Contreras, a resident assistant, estimated that only about 10 students were left in his residential hall, out of 120. Contreras has been working with student government representatives to collect relief donations for the Dream Center Foundation, a charitable group.
Some students, like Evan Li and Matthew Li, have decided to stay on campus. They played a game of horse at basketball courts off De Neve Drive while students nearby scurried to evacuate.
The university has developed a plan to evacuate students if necessary, with 14,000 students living on campus. In the case of a mandatory evacuation, UCLA said meeting points would be Pauley Pavilion and Tipuana Apartments, from which the university would provide transportation to alternative housing.
UCLA has promised to provide shelter, food, supplies, and Wi-Fi to students who need housing in the event of an evacuation. The university is working to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, and officials are monitoring the situation closely.
