The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has received a generous $10 million gift from alumni Heidi and Larry Canarelli to support the UCLA Health stroke rescue program and neurosurgery. The gift, awarded through the Canarelli Family Foundation, will have a significant impact on the university’s medical research and treatment programs.

For further information, read more details here

A substantial portion of the gift, $6 million, will be directed towards the UCLA Arline and Henry Gluck Stroke Rescue Program, enabling the launch of a third mobile stroke unit that will bear the Canarelli family name. This cutting-edge unit will provide critical care to stroke patients, improving their chances of recovery and rehabilitation.

The remaining $4 million will establish the Canarelli Family Oligodendroglioma Brain Tumour Research Fund, which will support research into developing therapies to treat oligodendroglioma, a rare form of brain cancer. Additionally, the fund will support a fellowship program, fostering the next generation of medical researchers and practitioners.

The gift has also led to the renaming of the neurosurgery check-in waiting area in the Edie and Lew Wasserman Building to honour the Canarelli family. Larry Canarelli, founder of American West Homes and head of BRUIN Capital Partners, and his wife, Heidi, made the donation in recognition of the exceptional care their daughter, Stacia Lemke, received at UCLA after her diagnosis with oligodendroglioma last year.

Lemke expressed her gratitude for the care she received, saying, “My entire life changed after I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Dr. [Linda] Liau and her team were there when I needed them most, and they could not have been more wonderful. UCLA Health exceeded all of my expectations and put me on the path to recovery.” This remarkable gift will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on UCLA’s medical research and treatment programs, benefiting countless patients in the future.
