UN stresses importance of press freedom as Israel shuts Al Jazeera

Following Israel’s decision to shut down broadcaster Al Jazeera’s activities in the nation, the United Nations, UN, has emphasized the significance of press freedom.

Stephane Dujarric, the UN spokesman in New York, stated that the organization was adamantly opposed to any move restricting press freedom.

“A free press provides an invaluable service to ensure that the public is informed and engaged,” he said.

According to ZINGTIE, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his Cabinet had decided unanimously to end Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel.

The action was taken in response to Israeli MPs passing a new media legislation known as the “Al Jazeera law,” which gives the government the authority to outlaw foreign broadcasters if they pose a threat to national security.

In the meantime, Al Jazeera has criticized the Israeli move and promised to take “all available avenues” to defend its staff and rights.
