Numerous University of Calabar undergraduate students who live in the male and female dorms have expressed concern about multiple wall fissures.

They voiced concerns that the walls would collapse as long as there are persistent, intense rains in some areas of the Calabar city.

Their worries were discussed on Thursday night’s “What I Will Do If I Had Power to Run Unical” phone-in show on Unical International Radio.

They argued that the hostels’ deteriorating conditions have persisted for a number of years and that halls 8 and 9 in particular are more vulnerable.

One Malabor Republic student, who only identified herself as Jane, stated:  “If I have power to be in charge of this school, the first thing I will do will be to embark on massive renovation of the hostels in Malabo Republic.

“There are many major cracks on the walls of hostel halls especially 1, 2, 4, 8, and 9.

“God forbid, these walls can cave in at any time and kill people’s children.

“These daily rains in Calabar can dangerously affect these hostels. I call on the school authorities to make hay while the sunshine.”

Another male student from a different dorm voiced his displeasure over the absence of electricity in the hpstels.

According to him, this has made it possible for harmful actions to occur in the dorms.

They counselled the student union government and the student welfare organisation to act for the students’ benefit.

Prof. Florence Bankong Obi, the university’s vice chancellor, had previously promised that the condition of the dorms had been noted for future action.
