During the launch of the second phase of the multi-year resilience education program (MYRP) funded by Education Cannot Wait (ECW) in Maiduguri, Borno State Capital, Vanessa Lee, UNICEF Chief of Education, stated, “This is a very important event for the BAY states because we are launching the Education Cannot Wait, a multi-year resilience program which is giving 50 million dollars to the three states as intervention in education to support children’s access to learning and their quality learning in schools and non-formal education centres.”

The program aims to enhance access to learning in schools and non-formal education centers. Lee noted that the first phase of the project improved access for over 530,000 marginalized children across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States, exceeding the initial target of 170,000 children

The second phase targets 130,000 students, with additional targets including children with special needs, teacher training, and supporting girls’ education. “The total number of students we are targeting this time around is 130,000, but there are many other targets, including children with special needs, training teachers, and supporting children, especially girls, to go to school,” Lee said.

The three-year project, which started now, aligns with the Federal Ministry of Education’s Roadmap for 2024-2027, aiming to transform and elevate access to quality education in line with national goals and global standards.

Borno State Commissioner of Education, Abba Wakilbe, commended UNICEF’s support to the BAY States, assuring that the state would promote educational initiatives. “We pledge to give you our hundred percent support. We thank you very much for this, and we welcome you all,” he said.

The launch marks the formal kickoff of the program in the three states, with UNICEF expressing optimism that it will achieve its intended goal under the leadership of the State and Federal Ministry of Education
