The Federal Government has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to address the malnutrition emergency in Sokoto State. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nantewa Yilwatda, emphasised the link between malnutrition and insecurity, stating, “There can be no food security without peace.” He urged the state to leverage its vast agricultural production to combat hunger and lauded the collaboration between the state and humanitarian partners.

The UNICEF Country Representative commended Sokoto’s commitment to combating malnutrition, particularly the allocation of N500m, and pledged N1.5bn in counter-funding. European Union Ambassador Gautier Mignot also commended the state’s efforts and reiterated the EU’s resolve to support vulnerable children.

During the visit, the delegation witnessed firsthand the toll of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) on children and health workers at the Sokoto State Specialist Hospital. Health officials warned that supplies of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) may run out by September, and Prof. Yilwatda emphasised the need for swift action, saying, “This is no time for bureaucracy. We must act fast to save lives.”

The delegation recommended that the federal government unlock RUTF supply chains, increase state investment, and improve the use of local food sources to address the crisis. Governor Ahmed Aliyu expressed appreciation to development partners and pledged sustained political will to end malnutrition in Sokoto
