The University of Ilorin has appointed three of its retirees as emeritus professors, recognizing their outstanding contributions to academia. The appointees are Is’haq Oloyede, Olu Obafemi, and Musbau Akanji.
The announcement was made following the university’s 304th Senate meeting, where the appointments were approved. Mr. Oloyede, a former vice-chancellor of the university and current registrar and CEO of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), retired from the university’s service in October 2024.
Mr. Obafemi, a distinguished scholar of English and Dramatic Literature, retired from the University of Ilorin in 2020. Mr. Akanji, a renowned scholar of biochemistry and former vice-chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, and the Federal University of Technology, Minna, retired in 2021.
These appointments honor the retirees’ lasting impact on the academic community and their respective fields of expertise. The university celebrates their achievements and contributions to the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem Age, congratulated the new emeritus professors, saying, “This recognition is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and commitment to academic excellence.”
Professor Age added, “We are proud to have had them as part of our academic community, and we look forward to their continued contributions to the university.”
The appointment of emeritus professors is the highest honor bestowed by the university on its retired professors, recognizing their outstanding contributions to teaching, research, and community service.
The new emeritus professors will be formally inaugurated at a later date, and they will continue to contribute to the university’s academic activities, providing guidance and mentorship to younger scholars.
In a statement, the university’s registrar, Dr. Fola Olowoleni, said, “The appointment of these distinguished scholars as emeritus professors is a well-deserved recognition of their academic achievements and contributions to the university.”
Dr. Olowoleni added, “We are grateful for their service to the university and look forward to their continued involvement in our academic community.
