The Civil Society on Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN) in Niger State marked World Malaria Day, celebrated annually on April 25, by launching a free malaria test and treatment programme for residents of Minna and its environs. This year’s theme is “Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite,” emphasising the need for a renewed global effort to eradicate the disease.

ACOMIN’s State Coordinator, Mr. Olasukanmi Kalejaiye, said the organization had taken the celebration to the Bosso community, where they conducted malaria sensitization, free tests, and treatment. He noted, “Malaria cannot be defeated with one strategy but a dimensional strategy in a more innovative way.” Kalejaiye emphasised the importance of collective action, stating, “It is time to recommit to ending malaria. We believe that we have the knowledge, life-saving tools, and targeted prevention, testing, and treatment methods to defeat this disease.”

He further stressed that everyone, including traditional institutions, must “reinvest in proven interventions, reimagine our strategies to overcome current obstacles, and reignite our collective efforts together with countries and communities to accelerate progress towards ending malaria.” The goal, he said, is to achieve a malaria-free future by influencing proven strategies, innovating to overcome challenges, and reigniting collective commitment

Kalejaiye also highlighted Nigeria’s efforts to eliminate malaria, noting that the country has “keyed into the eradication process with all the machinery put in place in the fight to curb the disease.” However, he appealed for increased national cooperation, addressing fragile health systems, and ensuring equitable access to prevention and treatment services to effectively combat malaria in Nigeria.

Earlier, the traditional leader of the community, Alhaji Muazu Laka, commended ACOMIN for identifying with his people and advised them to always visit health facilities for their healthcare needs. The highlight of the event was the symbolic free test and treatment for the traditional leader and community members.
