US authorities recover bodies in submerged pickup truck after Baltimore bridge collapse

Authorities in Maryland, the United States of America, said on Wednesday that divers found two dead while looking for the workers who plunged into the water following Tuesday’s collision between a cargo ship and the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Divers recovered the two dead trapped inside a red pickup truck that had been submerged under 25 feet of water in the bridge’s central span.

The victims, identified by Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Roland Butler, are Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, of Baltimore, and Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, 26, of Dundalk.

Authorities have alerted the men’s relatives, according to Butler.

Butler stated, “Based upon the conditions, we’re now moving from a recovery mode to a salvage operation because of the superstructure surrounding what we believe are the vehicles and the amount of concrete and debris; divers are no longer able to safely navigate or operate in the areas around this wreckage.”

Butler stated that four more construction workers are thought to be deceased but are still unaccounted for.

According to reports, the victims were from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico.

The Police Superintendent went on to say that every search has been carried out.

Butler added that authorities “firmly” believe the additional vehicles carrying victims are enclosed in superstructures and concrete from the fallen bridge, based on sonar investigations.

ZINGTIE recalls that the span collapsed early on Tuesday as a result of the ship running into a support pillar.

Danish shipping company Maersk was hiring the ship, and Grace Ocean Private Ltd owned it. It was sailing from Baltimore to Sri Lanka.
