US citizens barred from entering 2 countries in response to Trump travel ban

In response for similar restrictions on their residents trying to enter the United States, two African countries have stopped allowing U.S. citizens to enter their countries. Al Jazeera reports that both Burkina Faso and Mali have issued “travel bans” for Americans and are revoking their visas.

“In accordance with the principle of reciprocity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation informs the national and international community that, with immediate effect, the Government of the Republic of Mali will apply the same conditions and requirements to US nationals as those imposed on Malian citizens,” the Malian ministry said in a statement.

Both countries were added to the U.S. restricted entrance list by President Donald Trump late last year, and it went into force on January 1, 2026. Most inhabitants of the countries on the list are completely barred from entering the United States due to the prohibition. There are certain exceptions to the U.S. restriction for current visa holders, lawful permanent residents, and unusual circumstances like athletes or diplomats.

Thus far, the United States has banned travel to 39 nations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
