US election: Kamala Harris leads Trump in new poll after Biden’s exit

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, vice president Kamala Harris is narrowly ahead of former president Donald Trump in a nationwide presidential poll that was issued on Tuesday.

According to Reuters, the poll contrasts with the narrow two-point deficit that Biden faced against Trump in the previous week’s survey prior to his withdrawal from the race on Sunday.

Monday and Tuesday saw the conducting of the fresh poll, which followed the Republican National Convention, where Trump formally accepted the nomination on Thursday, and Biden’s declaration on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the race and endorsing Harris.

In the nationwide poll, Harris led Trump 44% to 42%, with a margin of error of just 3%. Her team claims she has won the Democratic nomination.

In a poll conducted on July 15–16, Harris and Trump were even at 44%, but in a poll conducted on July 1–2, Trump had a one-point lead, both within the same margin of error.

While national surveys provide significant indications of Americans’ support for political candidates, Reuters pointed out that a few competitive states usually tip the scales in favour of the United States.

Who wins a presidential election is ultimately determined by the Electoral College.
