Residents of Jabo hamlet in Sokoto State’s Tambuwal Local Government region remain fearful following a recent bombing carried out by the United States in coordination with the Nigerian government, despite ongoing security patrols in the region.
Shamsu Isah Yari, a village resident who observed the tragedy, told ZINGTIE that the community has yet to regain peace of mind following the explosion.
“We normally do not have serious problems here. There was some tension some time ago, but things had calmed down.
‘In fact, internally displaced persons from other villages usually come here for refuge. Then suddenly, on the night before last, we heard a loud explosion,” he said
Muhammad Sani Jabo, another young person in the village, characterized the event as horrifying, stating that many residents were perplexed by what had occurred.
“Honestly, it was very frightening. Some people even thought it was a nuclear bomb because of the level of destruction and confusion. We are appealing to the government to strengthen security in this area,” he said
ZINGTIE discovered that the Lakurawa terrorist gang has been intermittently terrorizing Jabo and adjacent towns, particularly during the rainy season.
Muhammaad Auwal T/Murtala, a journalist who visited Jabo following the event, stated that security personnel are continuously patrolling the area, despite the fact that no further security breaches have occurred.
However, villagers informed him that Lakurawa fighters typically operate in the area during the rainy season.
“They are known to come when crops begin to grow and usually leave after harvest.
“This suggests that Lakurawa elements may still be close to this community, even though they are rarely seen outside the farming season,” he was told.
According to residents, the organization frequently targets villagers during the rainy season, kidnapping them and demanding a ransom for their release.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Sani, a retired Major General and security specialist, stated that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy must be rethought immediately.
“You cannot defeat guerrilla warfare with a purely conventional army approach.
“History has shown that those who adopt guerrilla tactics often have the advantage. Look at cases like Charles Taylor and others.
“This kind of war is complex. We must change our strategy by infiltrating these groups to gather intelligence and understand their internal operations,” he said.
According to reports, the US conducted the attack in Sokoto in coordination with the Nigerian government, with signs that further operations may follow.
Beyond Sokoto, additional intelligence indicates that US surveillance drones have begun to hover over the Sambisa Forest, which is thought to be a major stronghold for Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in Nigeria’s northeast.
