Captain Abdullahi Bakoji, a retired Nigerian military officer, says the reported US efforts to weaken rebels are understandable, but warns that such measures might cause significant issues if not properly coordinated with Nigerian authorities.
Bakoji, who also serves as the Kano Chairman of Nigeria’s Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, told ZINGTIE that, while foreign military cooperation may be intended to lower the strength of armed groups, poor coordination might endanger people and exacerbate insecurity in other places.
Captain Bakoji said; “The United States try to weakened insurgents as said, then in that sense, the goal is understandable if it is so. However, such operations carry risk if not fully coordinated with Nigerian security forces.”
He explained that acting without complete local involvement might have unforeseen repercussions, such as displacement of violence and a breakdown of confidence between communities and the government.
“Uncoordinated actions can endanger civilians, undermine local governance of or even push insurgents into other areas.
“For these operations to be effective, the Nigerian government must ensure close collaboration with international partners protect civilians,” he said.
The former officer emphasized that, while international aid can be beneficial in the near term, Nigeria must prioritize improving its own security institutions.
He believes that competent administration, strong security institutions, and active involvement with local populations will be more important than external military efforts in achieving long-term peace.
