Reports that President Joe Biden is thinking about withdrawing from the presidential race have been denied by the White House.
Andrew Bates, senior deputy press secretary for the White House and deputy assistant to the president, called the New York Times claim untrue.
Posting on X, Bates wrote: “This claim is absolutely false and if we had been given more than 7 minutes we could have communicated this before it was publicized.
“That claim is absolutely false. If the New York Times had provided us with more than 7 minutes to comment we would have told them so.”
In response to a New York Times story claiming that Biden disclosed his potential withdrawal from the presidential race to his allies, Bates reacted.
An unnamed source was mentioned by the media as saying of Biden, “He knows if he has two more events like that, we’re in a different place,” referring to last week’s presidential debate in which Biden did poorly.
According to the publication, the president’s conversation is the first sign that he is genuinely thinking about whether he can bounce back from a disastrous performance in the debate in Atlanta.
According to a friend of Biden, who was quoted in the newspaper, the president realised he would have a difficult time persuading voters, funders, and the political establishment that his debate performance was an isolated incident.
It further stated that following a dismal debate performance the previous week, President Biden had informed a significant ally that he might not be able to save his candidature if he is unable to persuade the people in the next several days that he is qualified for the position.
The ally stressed that the president is still very much in the race for reelection and that he knows he needs to do well in his next few appearances before the holiday weekend, especially the interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos on Friday and the campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
