The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, has demanded the immediate removal of the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Professor Ahmad Adamu, who is also the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
ASUU argued that Professor Adamu’s dual role constitutes a conflict of interest and is hindering the university’s transition process. The union also rejected the alleged plan to appoint a new Vice Chancellor without due process and to reappoint Dr. Sadi Mohammed Sirajo as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor.
In a petition to the Minister of Education, Dr. Marauf Tunji Alausa, ASUU alleged that the Governing Council has violated statutory provisions and is acting in bad faith to impose a predetermined candidate as Vice Chancellor. “The entire process was a charade orchestrated by a compromised Governing Council that deliberately excluded critical stakeholders, violated statutory provisions, and acted in bad faith to impose a predetermined candidate,” the petition stated
ASUU also criticized the Council’s composition, saying it is “incomplete and illegitimate” due to the exclusion of statutory members representing the University Senate, Congregation, and Convocation. “This Act mandates that the Council must include representatives from these critical bodies to ensure fairness, transparency, and stakeholder inclusion in university governance,” the union argued.
The petition accused Professor Adamu of demonstrating a “clear lack of competence, foresight, and impartiality” in governing the university’s affairs, and called for his immediate removal. “His dual role constitutes a glaring conflict of interest, as his primary loyalty remains with ABU, not YUMSFUEK,” ASUU stated.
ASUU also accused the outgoing Acting VC, Dr. Sirajo, of exceeding his legal tenure, obstructing the university’s upgrade, and suppressing progress. The union demanded the reconstitution of the Council with all statutory members, a probe into fraudulent processes, and the restoration of withheld promotions and allowances.
“We urge the Federal Government to direct the restoration of all withheld promotions, allowances, and other entitlements,” the petition concluded
