A total of 119 students will graduate with First Class honours at the 42nd Convocation Ceremony of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS).

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bashiru Garba, made the announcement on Monday during a press briefing held at the Senate Chambers of the institution.

According to him, the first-class graduates are part of 3,561 students set to receive bachelor’s degrees, while the university will also confer 120 doctorates (PhDs) and 323 master’s degrees.

Prof. Garba noted that the convocation is particularly significant as it coincides with the golden jubilee celebration of the university, established in 1975.

“This year’s convocation is historic because it marks the golden jubilee of our great institution,” he said. “Activities from September 1 to 6 will include cultural displays, public lectures, debates, medical outreach, project commissioning, sporting events, a chancellor’s dinner, and, of course, the convocation ceremony itself.”

He disclosed that the institution would confer honorary doctorate degrees on Islamic scholar Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa and former Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Faruku Yahaya (retd). In addition, emeritus status will be bestowed on Prof. Dejo Abdulrahman in recognition of his academic contributions.

Highlighting the university’s growth over the past 50 years, Garba said, “UDUS has grown from four faculties and fewer than 200 students at inception to 16 faculties, two schools, 98 departments, and over 23,000 students, with 16 research centres tackling real-world challenges.”

He further commended the media for its role in promoting education and national development, urging journalists to continue to spotlight the achievements of the institution. “I want to particularly thank members of the press for their contributions to nation-building. I urge you to help tell the great story of 50 years of excellence at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto,” Garba added.
