Northwest University, Kano, has announced an increase in school fees for returning undergraduate students for the 2024/2025 academic session. The hike affects various charges, including central registration, administrative fees, and hostel maintenance.
According to a circular issued by the university’s ICT Directorate, returning students in certain faculties, such as Accounting, will now pay over ₦50,000 in total fees. This increment has sparked concerns, especially given the recent 50% reduction in registration fees for indigenes studying in state-owned tertiary institutions announced by the Kano State Government
The state government’s policy, introduced by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofar-Mata, aimed to alleviate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal and rising cost of living. Students have expressed discontent on social media and campus forums, calling on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene.
The apparent contradiction between the state government’s fee reduction policy and the university’s new fee schedule has raised questions about coordination between state education authorities and tertiary institutions. Students are seeking clarity and relief amid the rising costs.
