VC Warns New Students: Maintain Good Character or Risk Losing Admission.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, Osun State, Prof. Akeem Lasisi, has advised newly-admitted students to prioritise good character and learning, warning that failure to do so may result in the loss of their admission.

Speaking at a two-day orientation programme for the newly-admitted students of the 2024/2025 academic session, Prof. Lasisi, represented by his deputy, Prof. Monsuru Adeleke, emphasised the importance of good character in achieving academic excellence. “Good character is the foundation for academic excellence. No matter how brilliant a student may be, if he or she lacks good character, such a student cannot be awarded a certificate,” he said.

Prof. Lasisi urged the new students to shun all forms of social vices and embrace good character, stating, “If you are admitted as a student in this university, you can count yourself lucky because more than 4,000 candidates applied to this institution, but only 1,000 were admitted. Good character is important, so before a certificate can be awarded to any student, he or she must be found worthy both in character and learning.”

He further advised the students to be diligent and strive to be the best in their academics, adding, “The orientation programme is put in place to open the eyes and minds of the students to different aspects of the university’s life. The programme will also assist the students to know what is expected of them as students of the university. If after this orientation, you go against the rules and regulations of the school, you will be penalised.

In his presentation, Laaro Sulaiman, an official from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, warned the students against cybercrime and internet fraud, urging them to be conscious of the risks involved. “Do not engage in cybercrime. Use the knowledge from the internet to grow yourselves, rather than using it to destroy yourselves,” he advised.

The students were also sensitised to the dangers of corruption, the university’s code of conduct, documentation, and registration. They were also informed about the benefits of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and warned against indecent dressing, bullying, examination malpractices, cultism, and other vices.
