In the state’s Obi Akpor Local Government Area, supporters of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara demolished the statue of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, on Tuesday.
The young people were opposing plans by state and local government chairmen to prolong their terms in office.
The chairmen of the LG are loyal to Wike.
According to ZINGTIE, Wike and Fubara have been at odds since 2023 when they disagreed over who should manage the political system in the state.
The reluctance of the LG chairmen to resign from their positions after their terms ended on Monday gave rise to a fresh twist in the political situation on Tuesday.
Fubara ordered the chairmen to vacate their positions, but they refused, claiming a six-month extension was given by the pro-Wike faction of the Rivers House of Assembly.
During a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, the governor gave the order for all 23 LG chairmen to hand over to the Heads of Administration in their respective councils.
The Ijaw youths invaded the LG secretariats throughout the state hours after the telecast, preventing the chairmen from entering their offices.
With the slogan “No more Wike,” the demonstrators vandalised Wike’s statue at the Obi Akpor LG secretariat, where he had previously held the position of chairman.
